Newcastle United are now six points adrift of safety, with just six matches left to play this season.
Martin Keown has slated Newcastle United’s defending on Match of the Day, which was broadcast on BBC One on 9th April.
Newcastle were beaten 3-1 by Southampton yesterday, and their performance in the contest was far short of the quality required.
The Magpies’ display was nothing short of abject, and Keown singled out Taylor’s defending for particular criticism.
“You have to defend far better than this,” the former Arsenal defender said.
“This is shocking defending from Steven Taylor. It’s embarrassing. [For the first goal Shane Long] doesn’t even have to do anything to get away from him. I don’t understand that.”
Long’s opening goal was a signal of things to come from Newcastle in the first half, as they failed to get going.
The Magpies were not at the races, and when Graziano Pelle netted a second for his side just before the break the writing was on the wall.
Newcastle now need a miracle if they are to avoid being relegated, following what has been a disastrous campaign.
The Tynesiders are currently six points adrift of safety, with just six games remaining in their league season.
Newcastle’s next match comes against Swansea City at St. James’ Park on Saturday.
