Harry Redknapp's brutal one-word description of Aston Villa

The Villans are effectively relegated this season.

Harry Redknapp has written in his column for The Telegraph that "pathetic" Aston Villa could find themselves in League One by the 2017-18 season.

Villa's slump shows no sign of abating as the West Midlands club suffered a 2-1 home loss by Bournemouth on Saturday for an eighth successive Premier League defeat.

The Villans remain bottom of the table, a massive 15 points from safety with just five games to go as relegation to the Championship looks all but certain.

But former Tottenham boss Redknapp claims that they will also be lucky to stay in the second tier if their performance against the Cherries was anything to go by, suggesting they have been "absolutely awful" this term.

"As I watched the highlights of Aston Villa’s latest defeat I thought: this side could well be in the Championship for just a season – because the way they’re going they're heading straight for League One," he said to The Telegraph.

"If I had to think of one word to sum up Villa’s season it would be ‘pathetic’. They have been absolutely awful, and the atmosphere has been getting worse as relegation has become inevitable.

"You can’t blame the fans though. After all, they’re paying their well-earned money to watch a team that doesn’t just get beat – they get slaughtered."

Even Villa fans will find it hard to disagree with Redknapp's sentiments. It has been a shambles of a season which has seen two managers fired; the latest of which was Remi Garde two weeks ago, with the Frenchman only replacing sacked Tim Sherwood in November.
