Steve Howey says that Aleksandar Mitrovic will be key for Newcastle United and Jermain Defoe will be important for Sunderland.

Steve Howey has suggested to The Sunderland Echo that Aleksandar Mitrovic will be a key player for Newcastle United in their quest to stave off relegation to the Championship at the end of the season.

The Magpies are second from bottom in the Premier League table at the moment and are in real danger of getting relegated to the Championship.

Former Newcastle defender Howey believes that 21-year-old Serbia international striker, who joined the club in the summer of 2015, will be important for Rafael Benitez’s side between now and the end of the season.

The former England international, who now works as a football pundit, has said that striker Jermain Defoe will be key for relegation candidates Sunderland.

“Goals win you games. Defoe, for me, is an evergreen and still looks really sharp,” Howey told The Sunderland Echo when asked about the key men in fight for survival. “He was unlucky against West Brom.

“Aleksandar Mitrovic is coming into good form at the right time. He is big and strong and puts himself about. Those goals against Norwich will have given him a lot of confidence.”

Defoe has scored 12 goals and created 15 chances in 27 Premier League appearances for Sunderland so far this season.

Mitrovic has scored eight goals and created 22 chances in 27 Premier League matches for Newcastle so far this campaign.
