Steve Howey makes an observation about Georginio Wijnaldum

St James Park

Newcastle United are fighting for survival in the Premier League at the moment.

Steve Howey has told The Sunderland Echo that Newcastle United midfielder Georginio Wijnaldum tends to drift away from matches.

Wijnaldum has been one of the very few Newcastle players who have looked anywhere near decent so far this season.

Former Newcastle defender Howey has claimed that the Netherlands international midfielder is not always in the game.

“Jonjo Shelvey hit the ground running and Andros Townsend looks to be picking up,” Howey told The Sunderland Echo. “Georginio Wijnaldum tends to drift away, especially away from home.”

Wijnaldum is one of the best and most talented players in the current Newcastle squad, and he will have to step up his game in the final weeks of the season.

The 25-year-old midfielder has scored nine goals and created 43 chances in 31 Premier League matches so far this campaign.

The former PSV star has a pass accuracy of 85% and a shot accuracy of 69%, and has won 21 headers, 47 dribbles and 26 tackles.

Newcastle are second from bottom in the Premier League at the moment with 25 points from 31 matches.

Rafael Benitez’s side will return to action this afternoon when they take on Southampton away from home at St. Mary’s Stadium in the league.
