The Frenchman has been in sensational form this season, racking up 12 goals and eight assists whilst becoming the Hammers' star man since joining from Marseille last summer.
Ozil has not had a bad season either, currently sitting on 18 assists this term and closing in on Thierry Henry’s record of 20 in a campaign.
There is fierce debate about who has had the better season so far, with both firm contenders for their club’s player of the season awards ahead of their meeting at Upton Park today.
And when asked, Wright says it is arguably Payet who has enjoyed the better campaign. given it was expected of Ozil at the start of the season.
“It’s very hard to make the comparison as to who has done better this season but you have to say that you expected Ozil to do what he’s doing,” he told premierleague.com.
“When Payet came in you wouldn’t expect him to have the impact he’s had. His fantastic season has pushed West Ham to a position where they’re in with a chance of the top four.”
“They’re both amazing for their clubs but Payet more so, simply because no one has expected it and he has taken it by storm.”
The former forward has also likened the duo to Gunners legend Dennis Bergkamp.
That comparison has been made on several occasions already this season as Ozil has racked up the assists for Arsene Wenger’s side.
Given he plays for West Ham, Payet has of course been likened to Paolo di Canio, but Wright insists he too is like the Dutch legend, saying they all make defenders afraid.
“They have both got unbelievable assisting qualities and are technically fantastic players," he added.
“If you’ve got a player who you know is going to give you the right service, like Bergkamp, Ozil and Payet, you know defenders are going to be afraid.”
