Paul Merson urges Everton's Romelu Lukaku not to join Chelsea this summer

Everton’s Romelu Lukaku has been linked with a move away this summer.

Former player Paul Merson doesn’t see any sense in Everton striker Romelu Lukaku re-joining former club Chelsea this summer as speculation rises over his future, the Daily Star reports.

The Belgium international is enjoying a terrific campaign on Merseyside, scoring an impressive 18 goals and adding a further six assists in 30 Premier League matches thus far.

But Everton as a team are struggling, and their lowly position in the bottom half of the table has caused unrest between some supporters who clearly feel the club should be doing better.

Lukaku, 22, has proven his quality more than once this season and there is no doubt he could play at the very top level in the Champions League - a stage beyond what Everton can offer.

As such, speculation has been rising regarding the striker’s future at Goodison Park, but one team Merson urges him not to potentially join this summer is his former club Chelsea.

“If you are Romelu Lukaku, why would you go back to Chelsea? I can understand it from their point of view. He’s a great striker who will score you loads of goals. But he wants Champions League football,” Merson explained in his column for the Daily Star.

“Chelsea can’t give him that next season. And there’s no guarantee they will qualify for it next season either under new boss Antonio Conte.”

Lukaku has made no secret of his desire to play in the Champions League, and that could prove the deciding factor this summer as Everton will naturally want to keep hold of their most prized asset.

The Toffees currently sit in 12th position in the Premier League having lost four of their previous five league games heading in to Saturday’s fixture against Watford at Vicarage Road.
