Merson, though, has suggested that it will happen only if Tottenham are able to retain the services of head coach Mauricio Pochettino.
“They’ve (Manchester United) been linked with Harry Kane before and I’m sure they would love to have him,” the former Arsenal man wrote in The Daily Star. “But why would he go there now?
“Who’s going to finish higher next season out of Spurs and United? If Spurs keep their manager, I don’t see United finishing above them.”
Tottenham are certainly going to finish above United in the Premier League table this season and could even win the league title.
While it does look at the moment that Spurs are better equipped for the 2016-17 campaign than the Red Devils, it is too early to make predictions about next season.
Pochettino has proved himself to be a superb manager in the Premier League, but even if he stays at White Hart Lane, there is no guarantee that he will able to repeat the performance of this season.
Tottenham and United will face each other at White Hart Lane in the Premier League on Sunday evening.
United are likely to bring in top-quality players in the summer transfer window and perhaps appoint a new manager.
The Red Devils will certainly want to bounce back from the disappointment of this season, and they will be determined to do that with a bang.
