Former Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United midfielder Jermaine Jenas has told BBC Sport that Arsenal attacking midfielder Mesut Ozil has been one of the top six players in the Premier League this season.
The former England international has included Ozil in his shortlist for the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year award.
Jenas has picked Leicester City winger Riyad Mahrez as his 'Player of the Season', with his teammate Jamie Vardy also making the shortlist.
Tottenham Hotspur duo Toby Alderweireld and Harry Kane, and West Ham United attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet complete the former Nottingham Forest midfielder’s six-man shortlist.
"Arsenal's form dropping off when it did will not have helped Ozil's chances,” Jenas told BBC Sport while explaining his decision regarding Ozil. "I still think he has been brilliant, though.
"There were a lot of question marks over him before the season started about whether he was doing enough to justify his £42m fee, so he deserves some recognition for all those assists and how he held the mantle for their title bid for so long.”
Ozil has scored six goals and created 122 chances in 30 Premier League appearances for Arsenal so far this season.
The former Real Madrid star has a pass accuracy of 87% and a shot accuracy of 67%, and has won two headers, 41 dribbles and 26 tackles.
Arsenal are third in the Premier League table at the moment with 59 points from 32 matches, 10 points behind leaders Leicester City.
