Hutchison criticises Steven Taylor, Shearer and Asprilla react to Newcastle's 'hopeless' performance

Newcastle lost 3-1 away at Southampton this afternoon.

Newcastle United's survival hopes were dented by a 3-1 away defeat at Southampton - meaning they have lost each of their last nine Premier League away games.

After last week's 3-2 defeat at Norwich City, Newcastle need a result on the South Coast, but Shane Long's goal after four minutes set Newcastle on their way to defeat.

Graziano Pelle and Victor Wanyama added further goals to put Southampton 3-0 up, before Andros Townsend notched a consolation goal later on.

Still six points adrift of safety, Newcastle are running out of time in their bid to stay in the Premier League, and Rafael Benitez needs results quickly to avoid a drop to the Championship.

During and after the game, people with links to the club took to Twitter to react to the performance, with Newcastle-supporting pundit Don Hutchinson criticising veteran centre back Steven Taylor's defending for Southampton's first goal, and adding that the Magpies don't deserve to be in the Premier League.

Alan Shearer added that Newcastle were hopeless in the first half - and that was, as he put it, his polite verdict on their display before half time.

Another former striker, Faustino Asprilla, claimed that the players simply don't care, and the current state of affairs at St. James' Park is very sad.
