Steve Evans says Joey Barton is his Player of the Year

The Leeds boss raves about Joey Barton, tipping him for the POTY gong.

Leeds United boss Steve Evans has told a press conference, via Inside Futbol, that Burnley midfielder Joey Barton has been his stand-out performer in the Championship this season.

The 33-year-old has played a vital role in what is shaping up to be a wonderful season for the Clarets as Sean Dyche's boys sit top of the division and looking on course to bounce straight back into the Premier League.

Top-flight veteran Barton has certainly done his bit, making 32 Championship appearances - 31 of which were from the start - since joining the Turf Moor outfit from Queens Park Rangers last summer.

Next up for Barton and co is the visit of Leeds on Saturday morning, and Evans was unequivocal in his claim that the former Manchester City and Newcastle United man has been head and shoulders above everybody else in England's second tier division this season.

“How good has Joey Barton’s season been?" he is quoted as saying by Inside Futbol.

“I think if he is not Player of the Year in the Championship, some people should be looking at the voting papers and say if there is integrity behind our vote because he should be winning it by a distance.”

Not many of Evans's boys can expect to be nominated for the gong, as the Whites sit 15th in the Championship in what has proven another trying season for Leeds, whose former manager Uwe Rosler was fired in October and replaced with the 53-year-old Scot.
