Indeed, the Chronicle suggest Austin spurned Newcastle's advances in January.
And now the 26-year-old is up against the team he could have joined.
Austin is quoted as saying by the Chronicle: "Something’s obviously not gone right there but we know they’ll be fighting for their lives on Saturday It’s so important for them that they get those three points but on the other hand it’s so important for us too.
"So it’s nice that we’re still playing for something, still pushing, there’s a big six games to go for us and we just concentrate on us and hopefully the result can take care of itself.
"Hopefully we can keep our home form going and get the three points."
Whether the Magpies have missed out on a bargain is yet to be seen, of course. Austin will likely go on to score plenty of goals for Southampton, as he did for Queens Park Rangers.
But, so far this season, the 26-year-old hasn't played or scored all too regularly due to fitness.
Aleksandar Mitrovic, meanwhile, has started to net more for Newcastle. Their problems are far deeper than just the one position.
Newcastle need to strengthen in every department if they are to score more next season - although it is a tendency not to try hard enough to sign the right players that has hit them hard of the last few years.
