The defensive duo were key to their sides impressive draw in Germany.

Liverpool defensive duo Mamadou Sakho and Dejan Lovren were in impressive form as their side drew 1-1 with Borussia Dortmund.

The Reds travelled to Germany on Thursday evening to take on Jurgen Klopp’s former team in the first leg of their Europa League quarterfinal tie.

Belgian striker Divock Origi’s first half goal set them on their way to a 1-1 draw, and more crucially, secured them a vital away goal for the second leg at Anfield.

Key to their display were defensive duo Dejan Lovren and Mamadou Sakho, who both put in excellent displays to limit hotshot forward Pierre Emerick Aubameyang to passenger status.

Starting with Lovren, the Croatian had arguably his best display in a red shirt after a disappointing time at Anfield so far.

As the table provided by WhoScored shows, he posted a number of impressive defensive stats throughout the game.

He managed one tackle, two interceptions, two blocks and six ball recoveries in the game. His most impressive stat was his number of clearances as he posted eight in total.

Sakho was similarly impressive, with the Frenchman going some way to answering his critics with his display.

He managed one tackle, two interceptions, three blocks and four clearances in a solid performance. It was his number of ball recoveries that stood out though, with him managing eight in that regard.

Now all they need to do is repeat the feats in the decisive game at Anfield in a week's time.
