Mick McCarthy, Nigel Pearson and David Moyes have all been linked with the Aston Villa post following Remi Garde's dismissal.
Speaking on the Sky Sports Fantasy Football Podcast, Paul Merson has claimed that his former club Aston Villa should prioritise a new manager as their 'next signing'.
The ex-Arsenal and England international spoke of his disappointment in Villa's performances this term:
"There are ways to lose a football match, going down fighting. Villa just lost against Chelsea last week, there was nothing there."
He said it will be vital for the Villans' next managerial appointment to be the right one:
"Their biggest signing is their next manager. Moyes, Pearson or McCarthy would sort them out. I'd like to see Ian Taylor involved at the club, not just as ambassador but properly involved. He loves the club, he is a big Villa fan, the fans love him."
The Midlands outfit have endured one of the worst seasons ever in Premier league history, taking only 16 points from a possible 96 available.
The bizarre appointment of Remi Garde didn't help matters, and he lost control of the changing room, while Villa's plummet towards the Championship continued.
Nigel Pearson has been named as the bookmaker's favourite to take the reigns at Villa Park, and his no-nonsence attitude would certainly galvanise Villa, and hopefully bring and end to the inherent malaise that has gradually crept in at the Midlands club.
They host Bournemouth on Saturday, where a loss could confirm their relegation from the top flight.
