Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour said on the Drivetime show on talkSPORT on Thursday evening (broadcast from 4pm, April 7) that he does not agree with Leeds United head coach Steve Evans’s bold claim about Burnley midfielder Joey Barton.
According to Evans, former Newcastle United and Queens Park Rangers man Barton has been the best player in the Championship this season.
“He’s (Burnley manager Sean Dyche) got people out there like the boy (Tom) Heaton who is an exceptional player, the front two are exceptional and Joey Barton should get player of the year in the Championship, for me,” Evans told The Yorkshire Evening Post. “I think he has just been simply stunning.”
Although Parlour believes that Barton is having a good season, the former Arsenal star does not believe that the midfielder has been the best player in the Championship this season.
The former Middlesbrough and Hull City midfielder has claimed that Burnley striker Andre Gray has been the best player in the Championship this campaign.
“Well, that’s a big statement but Joey has done well,” said Parlour on the Drivetime show on talkSPORT on Thursday evening (broadcast from 4pm, April 7) when asked about Evans’s comments regarding Barton.
“I think he has been a real, not just for his ability. I think on the pitch he has helped the youngsters around him. He has been there and done it, but for me I would go for one of his teammates: Andre Gray.
“I think he has stepped up, he got that move from Brentford. He scores goals for fun, 23 goals this year, seven assists.”
Gray has scored 21 goals and created 30 chances in 34 Championship appearances for Burnley so far this season.
The 24-year-old striker has a pass accuracy of 69% and a shot accuracy of 54%, and has won nine headers, 31 dribbles and nine tackles.
Barton has scored two goals and created 22 chances in 31 league matches for Burnley so far this campaign.
The midfielder has a pass accuracy of 75% and a shot accuracy of 35%, and has won 53 headers, 10 dribbles and 68 tackles.
