Former player Ray Parlour believes Arsenal must score first if they are to have any chance of beating West Ham United in their London derby this weekend, the London Evening Standard reports.

The Hammers host the Gunners in what will be the last ever London derby at the Boleyn Ground.

The atmosphere is expected to be rocking, while West Ham’s current five-game unbeaten run has given them plenty of confidence as they still harbour hopes of finishing in the top four this season.

Arsenal have their own hopes of securing the Premier League title, yet in order to do so they simply must win all of their remaining matches and Parlour believes victory at West Ham is only possible on one condition.

“Arsenal have to take the lead. The first goal is vital – you can silence the fans with the first one at Upton Park, then you push on from there,” Parlour was quoted as saying by the London Evening Standard.

“Every single London derby you are playing [is special], but going to Upton Park, obviously it's a special stadium as well. You're really close to the pitch and the fans are right on top of you too. ”

“The atmosphere is always great, but there are some players who've got to go there and play and put some performance in.”

West Ham’s last home defeat in the league came way back in August, a 4-3 reverse to Bournemouth.

The challenge facing Arsenal couldn’t be bigger considering the circumstances, and Arsene Wenger’s side will know that anything less than a complete performance will not be enough.

The Gunners currently sit 11 points behind Premier League leaders Leicester with only a handful of games remaining, and their need to win on Saturday may suit West Ham with their ability on the counter.
