Arsenal travel to West Ham this weekend looking to keep up their momentum for their title push - but must find a way of stopping outstanding attacker Dimitri Payet.
Payet signed for West Ham last summer and is expected to be in the mix for individual player of the season awards, with his dead ball ability particularly eye-catching.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was asked about Payet at his weekly press conference, and admitted he was a player he was well aware of due to his Ligue 1 exploits, but for one reason or another, had chosen not to pursue a deal.
He said, quoted by SkySports: "He was a top talent, always, but had periods of being up and down.
"I've looked at him many times. I've known him for a long time. He played at Saint-Etienne and we watched him many times.
"I think he has all the attributes to be a top player, which he is, but he's 29 years old already. He's matured a lot and come back into the national team, which shows he was more consistent."
Payet went on to sign for Marseille, where he really hit form after a disappointing opening six months, and went on to earn a big money move to West Ham.
It appears Wenger decided not to pursue his interest in the Frenchman when at Marseille, possibly ruling him out due to his age, but this looks to be a clear mistake.
Payet is one of a number of players Wenger has publicly admitted to having considered signing but chosen not to, and the West Ham star has a chance to really highlight his mistake this Saturday.
Here is a look at how Arsenal fans reacted to Wenger's comments, unimpressed by the manager's assessment of the player, especially in light of their own squad's deficiencies...

.....but then decided he'd rather have a baby giraffe on a free transfer from Auxerre. #Judge

Wenger did not choose payet for inconsistency, what about Walcott and the ox!— paul taylor (@paultayl) April 7, 2016
If Wenger watched Payet "at St Etienne" that means he thought Gervinho was a better option. Gervinho.— James Benge (@jamesbenge) April 7, 2016
