The Magpies are currently 19th in the table and six points from safety.
It has been another disappointing campaign for the Magpies faithful after their near miss from relegation last season.
Their side currently sit 19th in the table and six points from safety following last weekend’s last gasp 3-2 loss to Norwich City.
It is the Canaries they are currently chasing in that final safe spot, with many now predicting they wont be able to escape the drop.
Despite their poor year, the fans have stuck with their team regardless, and Townsend has praised them, adding he hopes to do them justice in future.
"The home support especially since I've been here has been fantastic and they've really been our 12th man," he told nufc.co.uk
"You could see against Sunderland they pushed us on to get the late equaliser and we could have won the game.
"They're definitely going to play a part and I'm sure they will. Hopefully we can do them justice over the three games."
Townsend himself certainly has some work to do to earning the fans love following a slow start to life at St James’ Park.
He was one of several signings made in the January transfer window as the club spent big to try and secure their Premier League survival.
Instead he has struggled to make an impact, but could quickly become a fan favourite if he can help to keep them up by scoring or creating crucial goals in the games remaining.
