Derby County defeated Hull City 4-0 at the iPro Stadium.
Johnson, a record transfer fee signing for Derby, has come in for plenty of criticism over the past few months as he has struggled to replicate his decent form from earlier in the campaign.
Against Hull, however, he was played in arguably his most effective position as a roaming midfielder alongside Craig Bryson and he shone with two superb goals and an assist.
Commenting on Twitter after the game, former Derby skipper Taylor had a shout out for Johnson whom he played alongside during the midfielder’s earlier days at League Two side Northampton Town.
Derby’s victory helped put their playoff bid back on track following their weekend defeat at Cardiff City while denting Hull’s bid for automatic promotion in the process.
Johnson reacted first after Chris Martin had hit the post to give the East Midlands club the lead, while his second goal ended a sweeping Derby move which is a without doubt a contender for goal of the season.
Martin added a third for the Rams before Bryson wrapped up a convincing victory in injury time.
The win means Darren Wassall’s side remain in sixth position, four points ahead of Cardiff with just six games to go. Hull, meanwhile, are now fourth and some seven points off Middlesbrough in second.
