Sidwell came on as a sub when Stoke thrashed Spurs last May.
When Tottenham Hotspur were turned over 3-0 in comfortable fashion by Stoke City at the end of last season we doubt anyone predicted a year later they would be the main challengers for the title. Imagine that even fewer would have suggested Leicester City as the team they would be chasing.
They lost in one of the final games of the season 3-0 courtesy of goals from Charlie Adam, Stephen N’Zonzi and Jan Vertonghen in a game that former player Vlad Chiriches will want to forget.
It was a result that left them in sixth place in the Premier League.
A player who featured for Stoke in that game was Steve Sidwell.
He was appearing as a guest on Sky Sports News HQ today (06/04/16) when he was asked if he saw anything that suggested title contenders in the team he faced that day.
The Brighton and Hove Albion loanee clearly felt so:
“I think they have always had it in the locker haven’t they.
“The players that they’ve got, maybe last year they didn’t really perform to their full potential.
“Whereas this year, Pochettino has come in, obviously a great manager, a lot of the lads speak very highly of him from when he was at Southampton and obviously now at Spurs.
“They’re in the race. Obviously they’ve dropped points of late that could’ve put them in a better position. To put more pressure on the guys at Leicester. But they’ll push them the whole way.”
It is important to remember that Spurs had Chiriches and Federico Fazio at the back on that day and they have certainly improved the squad with astuteness in the 12 months since.
The Spurs team that Stoke beat that day is a completely different beast to the one currently fighting for the title.
Spurs fans will just hope a similar result is not in the offing before the end of the season.
