Top five finish is a great season for West Ham insists Dimitri Payet

The Hammers are currently sixth in the table after an impressive year.

Finishing in the top five would represent a great season for West Ham United this season, star man Dimitri Payet has told the club’s official website.

The Hammers are currently sixth in the table following the 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace at the weekend.

That result was something of a body blow to their hopes of securing a Champions League spot as Manchester City pulled three points away from them.

With Manchester United also competing, a top four place will be a hard fought one to say the least.

Hammers fans would be disappointed to miss out, but Payet has insisted that a top five finish represents a great season for Slaven Bilic’s side.

“It will be very tough but finishing in the top five will be a great season for us,” he told whufc.com.

“That would guarantee European football next season which would be very important for the club as they continue to develop.”

“Playing in Europe is important for clubs looking to progress. If you look at other clubs who have done that, you can see how far they come now. It is something that we want to do and become even bigger.”

Being so close to the top four, there is no denying that West Ham fans will be dreaming of Champions League football next season.

With them also eyeing the FA Cup as well though, in which they need to overcome Manchester United to reach the semi finals, perhaps they will be happy to sacrifice a top four finish for that.

As Payet insists, a top five finish would represent a strong first season for them under Bilic, and adding in an FA Cup triumph would only sweeten it further.
