Liverpool the worst tie for Borussia Dortmund, insists John Barnes

The two sides meet in the Europa League quarter finals on Thursday.

Drawing Liverpool in the Europa League was probably the worst possible one for Borussia Dortmund, John Barnes has told Titanbet.

The two sides meet in the Europa League quarterfinals on Thursday evening, with Liverpool travelling to Germany for the first leg.

Dortmund will not be as comfortably dispatched as Manchester United were in the last round however, as their comfortable dismantling of Tottenham Hotspur shows.

Indeed, they would have probably been keen to avoid the Germans for as long as possible given they are among the favourites to win the tournament.

Barnes though, insists that they would have felt the same way about drawing Liverpool, especially given it will be Jurgen Klopp’s return to the club.

“It’s probably the worst tie for Dortmund because of Jurgen Klopp going back there, they wouldn’t want him to come back and win,” he told Titanbet.

“It’s the game that the two teams probably wouldn’t have wanted but it’s there so there’s not a lot they can do about it.”

“He’s not under pressure from me to even get through this tie, or to improve in the league. Next year is when I will be putting him under pressure.”

While Barnes insists he is not putting pressure on Klopp to progress in this tournament, there is no denying the Liverpool manager will be keen to do so.

It currently represents their best hope of Champions League football, with the winners handed a place in Europe’s top tier competition.

They are unlikely to make it their via the top four as they sit ninth in the table and nine points behind Manchester City in fourth, putting their focus firmly on the Europa League as a result.
