Payet has been a revelation during his first season in English football, and he has quickly become a fans’ favourite at Upton Park.
The French attacking midfielder’s skill in possession has caught the eye, and he has become West Ham’s key creative force.
Payet has scored 12 goals and claimed 11 assists over the campaign to date, and Ferdinand feels that the 29-year-old should be considered as one of the leading contenders for the Premier League’s Player of the Season award.
“For me Payet and [Riyad] Mahrez should both be up there for the awards, the only thing going against Payet is he missed two or three months of the season,” he said. “But the fans love him, he’s a typical West Ham player and a joy to watch.”
Payet was ruled out for a portion of the season between November and December through injury.
He has quickly returned to his best, though, and he has helped West Ham compete for a Champions League qualification spot.
As things stand, the Hammers are in six place, but they are only three points behind Manchester City.
