According to a report in the Chronicle, Rafael Benitez is determined to rebuild Newcastle United, even if they are relegated this season.
It was reported by The Sun yesterday that Benitez would leave Newcastle for the Spain job - regardless of what division they were in.
The tabloid paper suggested that Benitez felt that the Spain job was very appealing, and even if he managed to keep Newcastle in the Premier League, he would have been inclined to leave if his country offered him the job.
However, the Chronicle claim that these reports are incorrect as Benitez is eager to stay at St. James’ Park.
The former Real Madrid boss does have an exit clause in his contract, but the latest reports offer hope that he will stay even if Newcastle drop into the Championship.
It has been suggested that Newcastle want to keep hold of Benitez, even if they do suffer regelation (Chronicle).
As things stand, Newcastle are in 19th position in the Premier League. The Magpies are six points off safety, with just seven games remaining.
Newcastle’s next match comes against Southampton at St. Mary’s on Saturday.
