Michail Antonio: Payet doesn’t even practice free kicks in training

Payet Skill

The West Ham star has been sensational from set pieces this season.

Dimitri Payet doesn’t practice free kicks in training, he just saves it for games, Michail Antonio has told the club’s official website.

The Frenchman has become the star man at Upton Park this season, enjoying a fine first campaign in England since his move from Marseille.

His ability from set pieces has caught the eye, with him scoring a number of sensational free kicks as the Hammers push for the top four.

He was at his best in the 2-2 draw against Crystal Palace as he curled a 20-yard-freekick into the top corner, in a goal that delighted many.

One would assume that his skill comes from hours spent on the training ground, but Antonio insists that isn’t actually the case.

“He doesn’t really practice them, to be honest!” he told whufc.com.

“I’d say that he just saves them for games – that kind of thing! You can see in the games that he has got it in the bag all the time.”

“He did it away with France against Russia and he did it again on Saturday, so it’s just one of those things that you can’t give us free-kicks because he will punish you!”

Slaven Bilic’s side will be hoping Payet can continue to produce moments of magic as they hunt down a top four place and FA Cup glory.

They are currently three points behind Manchester City who occupy fourth place, meaning a place in the Champions League is very much up for grabs.

An FA Cup semi final place is also up for grabs if they can overcome Manchester United in their quarter final replay, and they will need Payet at his best to be successful on both fronts.
