Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot will undergo an operation today.

Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot has taken to social networking site Twitter to send a message ahead of his operation today.

The 29-year-old suffered a serious knee injury during international duty with the Republic of Ireland last month.

The former Charlton Athletic man ruptured knee ligaments in the friendly international match against Slovakia.

Elliot will miss the rest of the season and will also sit out of the Euro 2016 finals in the summer.

The Newcastle goalkeeper has revealed on Twitter that he will undergo an operation today.

Elliot has been playing relatively well for Newcastle this season, and his absence is a blow to the Magpies’ chances of surviving in the Premier League.

Rafael Benitez’s side are second from bottom in the Premier League table at the moment with 25 points from 31 matches.

Newcastle are six points behind 17th-placed Norwich City and have a game in hand.

In 21 Premier League appearances for the Magpies this campaign, Elliot kept four clean sheets, and made 2.29 saves per game and 1.33 saves per goal on average.
