The Frenchman has been superb for West Ham United this season.
Paul Merson questioned on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ last Saturday afternoon (April 2, broadcast from 12pm) how Newcastle United managed to miss out on Dimitri Payet.
The Frenchman has been the star of the show for West Ham United this season with a series of impressive performances since signing from Marseille in the summer of 2015.
Payet was at his best once again on Saturday afternoon as he scored a 20-yard free-kick in his side’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace in the Premier League.
Ligue 1 has been a division that the Magpies have often bought players from in recent years, and Merson has questioned how they managed to overlook Payet in their scouting missions.
“I can’t talk highly enough of the bloke I think he’s absolutely different class,” he said on the Gillette Soccer Saturday show on Sky Sports News HQ last Saturday afternoon (April 2, broadcast from 12pm).
“The thing about him though, is Newcastle United bought a lot of French players over the last few years. Where did they miss Payet along the way?”
There is no denying that Newcastle could certainly do with a player of Payet’s quality in their side at present.
It has been another disastrous campaign for them so far, as they now sit 19th in the table and six points from safety following the loss to Norwich City at the weekend.
Newcastle lack a star player who could turn their fortunes around, and perhaps if their scouts had spotted Payet, then things could be very different for them.
