The Dutchman has been in good form for the club this season.
Not many of Newcastle United’s players are going to come out of this season with any credit. The Magpies have struggled this season and after defeat to Norwich at the weekend it looks like they might be on their way down to the Championship.
But one player who has been in good form is Dutchman Georginio Wijnaldum.
He was signed by the club in the summer from PSV Eindhoven and the Dutch international has been in good form this season.
But with the club seemingly on their way to the drop speculation is rife that he might leave in the summer.
He has been speaking to the media in Holland this week and he was asked if he has a relegation clause in his deal, meaning he could depart if the club do drop down a division.
Wijnaldum told Metro Nieuws:
"My role is indeed still a bit unclear. But I am no different in this situation.
"Do I have a clause that I can leave if relegated? I do not give information about what is in my contract. I do not think about it until the end of the season, focus on the upcoming matches.
“The club is working hard to put everything in a row and I am confident that we will be okay. "
Wijnaldum then was clearly non-committal about his future, not wanting to distract from the important matters on the pitch at Newcastle United going into the final stages of the season.
If Newcastle are relegated however it is hard to see Wijnaldum stick around at the club.
Plenty of teams will be interested in the player this summer and Wijnaldum will not want to be playing in the second tier.
Hopefully, for Newcastle fans, Wijnaldum can help the club remain in the Premier League.
