The Dutch midfielder was one of Steve McClaren's few successes.
It looks like too little too late for Newcastle United regarding their managerial change.
The club sacked Steve McClaren in March and brought in Rafa Benitez with the club in serious danger of being relegated to the Championship.
The Spaniard has not however been able to turn around their fortunes and is still seeking a first win.
Not many of the Newcastle players can come out of this season with any credit but Georginio Wijnaldum might be a candidate.
He had this to say regarding the sacking of McClaren and his replacement:
"I am sorry (about McClaren’s departure). But that's football.
“Players are not fired and that is sometimes unfair.
“Benitez put the other down, because we have collected a lot of goals against. He is looking for the right balance, wants to play more compact. "
Benitez was certainly always going to struggle with this current crop of Newcastle players. For all their apparent talent they have not been able to turn things around under the Spaniard and even Wijnaldum’s form has been sketchy in recent weeks.
Hopefully Wijnaldum can find his best form and inspire a few of his team-mates around him as well in a push for Premier League survival.
