Everton's season is spiralling out of control.
After suffering their 10th league defeat of the campaign against Manchester United on Sunday, the Toffees appear destined to finish outside the top half for the second year running.
With their squad - Romelu Lukaku is the Premier League's third-highest scorer, while John Stones and Ross Barkley are two of English football's brightest young talents - that's a significant under-achievement, regardless of reaching the League and FA Cup semi-finals, as they have done.
The manager, Roberto Martinez, has copped for most of the flack so far, with many fans venting their frustrations in his direction in recent weeks.
The Spaniard struggled to help his own cause with a series of bizarre post-United comments - notably those suggesting his players booed each other in the dresssing room - and long-serving defender Leighton Baines may have made things worse with comments made to the Liverpool Echo on Monday.
"I just don’t feel as though the chemistry is quite there with the team on the pitch at the moment, and it hasn’t been for a while," Baines said.
The left-back's words have prompted a strong reaction from Toffees fans on Twitter, with Martinez's popularity appearing to have taken another hit.
Here's the best of the reaction:
Martinez has created cliques and destroyed the long standing team spirit. He didn't speak to Baines for weeks for some unknown reason #EFC— DJOTaylor (@DJOTaylor) 4 April 2016
Think Baines has definitely chucked a grenade in the room today. #EFC— Steviemac (@steviemac2010) 4 April 2016
Baines is basically saying Martinez has killed the confidence and togetherness of the players. #EFC— Gra (@seddo1984) 4 April 2016
So it looks as though Baines has lost faith in the manager - likely that many others in the team have too #EFC— EFCTweeter (@EFCTweeter1878) 4 April 2016
@LivEchoEFC at last someone saying it how it is... Take note Roberto!!!— David Whelan (@Dave_Whelan) 4 April 2016
@LivEchoEFC manager has lost dressing room and that comment and jags interview yday prove as much— Gasballs (@Gazgasballs) 4 April 2016
@LivEchoEFC You can tell Baines isn't happy with Martinez, I bet he's dropped next week for Oviedo for these comments.— Phil Howarth (@Phil_Howarth) 4 April 2016
@LivEchoEFC if baines is talking to the press, then the manager has lost the dressing room by a mile— markwalsh (@madmiyagi) 4 April 2016
@LivEchoEFC The team has been deteriorating for over 2 years now. A coincidence with Martinez being manager - strange that hey ?— Jim S (@Bluebailey55) 4 April 2016
@LivEchoEFC bet Baines won't play the next match Martinez will say he's picked up an injury— Ken Rushton (@blue4ever09) 4 April 2016
There was a clear message in Baines' comments yesterday but if you can't see it then it's fine, it changes nothing, Martinez has to go— Jonathan Dickinson (@joth1878) 5 April 2016
Have to agree with the comments of baines as it seems to make sense. Players all over the place. Management at fault 100%.— Phil Fletcher (@philfletch) 4 April 2016
Doesn't take a rocket scientist to see what Baines & Jagielka think of Martinez looking at their comments in recent interviews.— Adam Hunter (@AdHunter1984) 4 April 2016
Those comments by leighton baines confirm what we all thought, martinez has lost the players. The powers that be simply have to act now— Tony (@TonyrTPIB) 4 April 2016
Baines' comments there may well get Martinez sacked, no way back when one of the most respected players at the club is saying that.— ㅤ (@leviefc) 4 April 2016
