The 21-year-old started at left-back as the Timbers fell to a 4-1 defeat at Orlando City SC on Sunday night.
The 21-year-old Englishman started at left-back in Sunday’s match at Orlando City SC but could not prevent his side from falling to a disappointing 4-1 defeat as their defence had no answer to an in-form Kaka.
The Brazilian superstar, who was making his first appearance of the season after recovering from a thigh strain, had a dominate game against the 2015 MLS Cup winners, setting up two first-half goals and scoring another after the break to put the hosts 3-0 up within 48 minutes.
Trinidadian winger Kevin Molino later converted a spot-kick in the 76th-minute after being brought down in the box by Diego Chara, before Timbers substitute Jack McInerney netted a late consolation goal.
The defeat leaves Portland with just four points from their first four games after going winless since beating Columbus Crew SC 2-1 in their season opener, with their defence conceding nine goals in the absence of injured club captain Liam Ridgewell.
Caleb Porter's side have also struggled to find a replacement for Jorge Villafana after the left-back was sold to Santos Laguna shortly after their MLS Cup victory in December, and Barmby clearly failed to show he was the solution on his MLS bow.
The Leicester winger, who arrived in the US last month on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent move, has had some previous experience at the position but his lack of defensive nous was more than apparent against Orlando.
It was only his first game of course – and he was far from the lone Timbers player who disappointed – but that did not stop supporters from writing some harsh reviews of his performance on Twitter over the course of the match.
Orlando should go down that right side every time. Barmby is lost.— Greg (@ShieldsPhoto) April 4, 2016

To say Jack Barmby is trash is an insult to garbage.— Mark Gleba (@markgleba) April 4, 2016
Barmby is clearly not our answer at left back. Not his fault since that is not is natural position #rctid— Brian Fravel (@fravelb) April 4, 2016
Send Barmby home ffs— Woody (@woody_adams) April 4, 2016
Barmby has been the stuff of horrors so far.— Petterdave (@petterdave) April 4, 2016
How long do we have to wait to figure out if it's just first game jitters or if Barmby is just plain terrible? #RCTID— D'Art Strickland (@bigdart) April 4, 2016
I have a feeling Barmby isn't going to be playing for a while after this. #RCTID— Yossarian (@anoncoach) April 4, 2016
As good as Kaká is, Barmby is equally trash.— Trevor Brady (@trevor_brady) April 4, 2016
Why is Barmby still on the field? Has been awful in every respect so far. Understand he's young/out of position, but still. #RCTID— James Russell (@james_russell22) April 4, 2016
