Portland Timbers fans pan Leicester City loanee Jack Barmby on Twitter after difficult debut

The 21-year-old started at left-back as the Timbers fell to a 4-1 defeat at Orlando City SC on Sunday night.

It’s fair to say that Leicester City loanee Jack Barmby did not enjoy a great debut for the Portland Timbers.

The 21-year-old Englishman started at left-back in Sunday’s match at Orlando City SC but could not prevent his side from falling to a disappointing 4-1 defeat as their defence had no answer to an in-form Kaka.

The Brazilian superstar, who was making his first appearance of the season after recovering from a thigh strain, had a dominate game against the 2015 MLS Cup winners, setting up two first-half goals and scoring another after the break to put the hosts 3-0 up within 48 minutes.

Trinidadian winger Kevin Molino later converted a spot-kick in the 76th-minute after being brought down in the box by Diego Chara, before Timbers substitute Jack McInerney netted a late consolation goal.

The defeat leaves Portland with just four points from their first four games after going winless since beating Columbus Crew SC 2-1 in their season opener, with their defence conceding nine goals in the absence of injured club captain Liam Ridgewell.

Caleb Porter's side have also struggled to find a replacement for Jorge Villafana after the left-back was sold to Santos Laguna shortly after their MLS Cup victory in December, and Barmby clearly failed to show he was the solution on his MLS bow.

The Leicester winger, who arrived in the US last month on a season-long loan with a view to a permanent move, has had some previous experience at the position but his lack of defensive nous was more than apparent against Orlando.

It was only his first game of course – and he was far from the lone Timbers player who disappointed – but that did not stop supporters from writing some harsh reviews of his performance on Twitter over the course of the match.
