Newcastle United defending is hopeless, says BBC pundit Chris Sutton

Chris Sutton believes Newcastle United are doomed to relegation.

Former Premier League title winning striker Chris Sutton believes Newcastle United are doomed to relegation and there is not a thing Rafa Benitez can do about it.

Sutton told BBC Radio 5 Live's Monday Night Club football programme that the squad the Spaniard has inherited is fundamentally flawed, with a real lack of quality in defence destined to be the club's undoing.

He said: "The reason Newcastle will go down is because they will concede goals. They are hopeless at the back.

"Benitez might have been right appointment at the right time but it's still same weak players, no characters."

Newcastle have gained a disappointing one point from a possible nine from their opening three games under Benitez, failing to get a 'new manager bounce' which is often discussed regarding new appointments.

They shipped three goals in a defeat to Norwich City at the weekend, undoing good work from substitute Aleksandar Mitrovic who netted twice in the game to haul them back into it.

Newcastle's next fixture is away to Southampton, who beat Liverpool in their last game at St Mary's, before a must win game at home to Swansea City.
