Everton fans have heavily criticised Roberto Martinez for failing to deliver on their expectations this season.
The Toffees are sat in 12th in the Premier League table, despite having assembled one of the most talented squads in England.
Martinez is now facing widespread calls for him to be sacked, with the atmosphere around Goodison Park starting to turn sour.
However, Murphy has questioned what Everton fans actually want, and the former Fulham midfielder argues that this inconsistency was inevitable, as they have so many youngsters in their squad.
“Everton have a lot of young players, and inconsistency is inevitable,” he said. “Stones is one of the best centre backs I’ve ever seen coming through. Barkley is still coming through - he had a great first half to the season, but has dipped a little bit recently.
"People keep talking about Lukaku and what a brilliant season he’s had - yes, he has, but his link up lets him down a little bit.
“I’m not sure what Everton fans really want. What do they want to do - go back to being hard to beat and negative and being a bit higher up the table?
“If three or four games went a bit better for them they’d be sat in seventh or eighth.”
Martinez’s future at Everton may well depend on how well the team perform in the FA Cup over the rest of the campaign.
The Toffees have made it through to the semi-final of the cup competition where they will take on the winners of Manchester United’s replay against West Ham United, and if they fail to progress the calls for Martinez to be sacked will only grow louder.
