Robbie Savage makes a bold claim when comparing Villa and Derby County

Derby County West Stand

Derby County hold the record for the lowest ever Premier League points tally.

Former player Robbie Savage believes Aston Villa’s side are the worst ever team to feature in the Premier League, telling the BBC how they even pip the Derby County side of 2007-08.

The Rams hold the record for having achieved the lowest ever points tally in Premier League history after they picked up just 11 points over the 2007/08 campaign, winning once all season.

Many Derby fans believe their tally will not be topped again not least in the near future, yet Villa gave it a pretty good go this season as they currently sit on a measly 16 points.

Savage, a member of that ill-fated Derby campaign, believes this Villa side are actually worse despite acclaiming more points as he suggests the West Midlands club can have no excuses.

"I think this Villa team are worse than my Derby team. Not in terms of points - we amassed just 11 points and were terrible,” the former midfielder told BBC Radio Five Live.

“But we weren't ready for the Premier League, we tried to sign people in January and it didn't work. Aston Villa are an established Premier League club. I think this is the worst Premier League side in history."

Derby were a shambles on their last visit to the top-flight, but one has to remember their promotion was largely unprepared as they finished 20th in the Championship only the season before.

Five years ago Villa were knocking on the door for a Champions League spot, and having featured in every top-flight season since its reform they can have little excuses in terms of preparation.

The Villains have a big summer ahead of them, and their supporters will be hoping they don’t follow Derby’s route of failing to bounce back at the first attempt and later being stuck in the second tier.
