Paul Merson: Christian Benteke is just waiting for Liverpool exit

Liverpool striker Christian Benteke cannot wait for the season to finish, Paul Merson has told Sky Sports Soccer Saturday.

The forward has endured a difficult campaign since his big-money move from Aston Villa in the summer with just eight goals to his name so far.

Their 3-2 loss to Southampton in March was arguably one of his lowest points, as Jurgen Klopp berated him on the pitch after he missed a gilt-edged chance in the game.

An exit is expected in the summer as the German moulds his squad and Merson says the Belgian cannot wait for the season to finish.

"I think he just cannot wait for the season to finish," he told Soccer Saturday.

"It’s one of those situations where he knows he won’t be there next season and his mind now is on the Euros.”

"I didn't like [Klopp's criticism]. I think it's disrespectful and there's no need. The manager afterward will have probably sat down and thought 'bad move'."

It has certainly been a disappointing campaign for Benteke who arrived at Anfield having been a regular goalscorer at Aston Villa.

The problem for him has been adapting to the way Liverpool play, with their passing style a stark contrast to the crossing game that saw him thrive at Villa Park.

Despite his struggles, there are likely to be plenty of takers, with many sure to think he’s worth a gamble given how he’s performed in the Premier League before his stint on Merseyside.
