The Everton defender put in a good performance against Manchester United this weekend.
Everton defender John Stones has had a tough time recently. After a below par spell of form for Everton he then had a slip up on international duty for England which proved costly against the Netherlands.
But he put in a brilliant performance against Manchester United for Everton today, even if he did end up on the losing team in a 1-0 defeat at Old Trafford.
Prior to the game a former Manchester United defender was telling Stones not to change his sometimes risky style of play.
Stones’ style has often been compared to former England international Rio Ferdinand. Rio himself has now spoken about that comparison, telling the Daily Mail that mistakes were just part of the learning curve for him and would be for Stones:
"He should continue his style of play.
"I'm someone who understands the way he plays and I'd rather see someone be able to bring the ball down and pass it to a team-mate and keep the ball rather than someone who just boots it outside the stadium.
"There is a time for that and that's where John has got to work out when time is right to kick it out and when the time is right to play. If he wants to be a top player he'll work it out."
Ferdinand played a similar style to Everton’s young talent and it seems as though he is giving his full backing to the England international to one day become a future star for club and country.
If Stones can continue putting in performances like the one he did today v United then he will surely go on to reach the same sort of level that Ferdinand did.
