Sunderland midfielder Jan Kirchhoff had another outstanding game as he completely dominated the midfield during his side’s 0-0 draw with West Bromwich Albion at the Stadium of Light.
The Black Cats had enough chances to win two games let lone one, yet a lack of prolificacy in-front of goal was their ultimate downfall as a stubborn Baggies side held on for a point.
With Norwich City beating Newcastle United 3-2 in the weekend’s big relegation six-pointer, Sam Allardyce’s side now have a mountain to climb and he will rue his side’s inability to beat West Brom.
Still, there were plenty of positives to take from Sunderland’s performance, notably with holding midfielder Jan Kirchhoff once again proving what a superb January transfer window acquisition he was.

As shown the table provided by Opta, the former Bayern Munich man controlled the midfield throughout the 90 minutes and made a number of key defensive contributions.
Kirchhoff posted two tackles, three aerial duels won, seven effective clearances and ten defensive duels won as he prevented West Brom from making any sort of attacking inroads throughout.
Sunderland totalled over 20 efforts on West Brom’s goal, while the visitors on the other hand mustered up just three attempts as they struggled for creativity and looked content with just a point.
Kirchhoff was excellent in his defensive task, yet he is also a very reliable player in possession as he took 80 touches and made 43 accurate passes - among his side’s highest tallies.
The draw now leaves the Wearside club four points adrift of safety and seemingly with a mountain to climb.
