14 Ball Recoveries in two games: Tottenham's Wimmer steps up with his place on the line

Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer stepped up with his place in the team under scrutiny.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Kevin Wimmer was given the nod in a huge game for the club away to Liverpool, despite Jan Vertonghen's return to fitness.

Wimmer stepped in after Vertonghen suffered a knee injury in January, and has fitted in seamlessly alongside fellow summer signing Toby Alderweireld at centre-back.

There is only one way to keep Vertonghen out, and that is to make himself 'undroppable' - and his displays in recent games have seen his stake a good claim to this end.

Against Liverpool he was impressive, winning the ball back for his team on seven occasions, matching his previous best in a Tottenham shirt, made in his last match for the club, versus Bournemouth.

Kevin Wimmer Tottenham vs Watford 6
Kevin Wimmer Tottenham vs Arsenal 5

Kevin Wimmer Man City vs Tottenham 5

The Austrian is really getting into a good run of form for Tottenham right now, and dropping him is a risk the club do not need to take, as it would only place undue pressure on Vertonghen, who is short of match sharpness.

He has earned his spot in the team and is responding to pressure for his place in the right way, by improving, rather wilting, and makes Mauricio Pochettino's team selection for upcoming games tricky, but simple at the same time.
