Carlos Carvalhal comments on Keiren Westwood's international hopes, calls him best 'keeper in the Championship

Westwood is not currently in the Republic of Ireland set-

Newcastle United and the Republic of Ireland have been dealt a blow recently after Rob Elliot suffered a serious knee injury on international duty with Ireland.

Now Ireland boss Martin O’Neill needs to decide on who will be his Ireland goalkeeper for the European Championships this summer.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Carlos Carvalhal is certain over who he thinks should get the nod – the Owls stop Keiren Westwood.

He is quoted by the Sheffield Star as stating:

“I can’t talk about the options of another coach because if I do this, I am shooting against my goal because I don’t like other coaches talking about my options.

“What I can say about Keiren is what I said before: we are very happy with Keiren. He is doing fantastic here, he is a goalkeeper who was the best in the Championship, and he is still the best ‘keeper in the competition.

“After this, it is the problem of the other coach [O’Neill]. He understands his goalkeepers. But that doesn’t mean that Keiren can’t be involved in the future. It is not my job to comment on.”

Westwood has 18 caps for his country and is considered one of the best goalkeepers in the second tier.

But he has not featured for Ireland recently and appears to be below West Ham United’s Darren Randolph and Millwall’s David Forde in the reckoning – much to the shock of Wednesday fans.

Martin O’Neill must consider him to be first-choice for Ireland this summer.

He has been performing well for one of the Championship’s top clubs this season and was the best keeper in the division last term.

Meanwhile Randolph has been a sub at West Ham whilst Forde is second-choice stopper at League One Millwall.

Sheffield Wednesday fans will be shocked if Westwood does not end up at least in the Ireland squad this summer.
