The game could have major implications for the relegation battle in the Premier League.
And while Neil admitted that it would be a huge boost if they could beat Rafael Benitez's men, he suggested that their survival hopes do not need to be lifted as urgently as Newcastle's do.
"It's one of those finely balanced games where I think looking at the table, Newcastle probably need to win the game more than us but it would be an absolutely crucial win if we could go and get it," he said, as reported by the Shields Gazette.
Following the game at Carrow Road, Norwich face Crystal Palace and Sunderland, which are the two teams sat either side of them in the table currently, meaning that they will have very winnable games ahead straight away if today's results means that they need to bounce back.
And while Newcastle also have two of the sides in the bottom five - Crystal Palace and Aston Villa - still to play, the fact that their game against the Villains is not until the penultimate fixture of the season means that the result may mean nothing by that stage.
However, Benitez will be reminding his players that if they win against the Canaries, they will not only draw level on points but they also have a game in hand to potentially drag themselves away from danger and leave Norwich having to play catch-up.
