Sheffield Wednesday defeated Huddersfield Town 1-0.

Sheffield Wednesday boosted their Championship playoff hopes by narrowly defeating Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield Town 1-0 in a pulsating game at the John Smith’s Stadium.

The Terriers have improved of late and were always going to pose a problem for Wednesday, especially in-front of their own supporters and considering the way the corresponding fixture went.

In a tight encounter, the Owls grabbed the only goal of the game as Argentine forward Fernando Forestieri combined with fellow striker Lucas Joao to score with less than ten minutes remaining.

The former Watford man will no doubt grab the headlines for what appears to be yet another vital winner for the club, yet arguably the Owls’ outstanding player was instead midfielder Kieran Lee.

As shown by the table provided by Opta, the holding midfielder once again proved why he is such an important figure at Hillsborough by contributing greatly in a number of key areas.

Sitting in-front of the back four, the former Oldham Athletic man posted an impressive three tackles, three interceptions, six defensive duels won and eight ball recoveries over the course of the 90 minutes.

Moreover, in possession he was reliable as ever and often instigated Wednesday’s attacks from deep, taking 66 touches and making 38 accurate passes with overall success rate of 83%.

The win moves Carlos Carvalhal’s men above Derby County in the Championship table following the Rams’ 2-1 defeat to fellow playoff hopefuls Cardiff City in South Wales.

With just seven games to go, the race for the top six is becoming increasingly more exciting with each passing week and with victory over Huddersfield, Wednesday have their fate in their own hands.
