Steve Howey comments on Norwich v Newcastle United

St James Park

The ex-Magpies defender wonders whether his former side Newcastle United are "doomed".

Former Newcastle United defender Steve Howey has questioned whether both his old club and Norwich City are "doomed" ahead of tomorrow's clash at Carrow Road.

It is a massive game for both sides' Premier League survival hopes, with the Magpies 19th in the table, three points behind 17th-placed City with a game in hand.

Victory would be huge for United, which would be Rafael Benitez's first since replacing Steve McClaren as manager three weeks ago.

It promises to be a "huge day" for the top-flight strugglers, and Howey has asked the question which both sets of supporters must be asking.

Early days for Benitez, of course, but there has been signs of improvement since he replaced McClaren.

For a start, the Magpies, who conceded 12 in their last seven games under the ex-England boss, are no longer shipping goals, with Newcastle giving away two goals since the Spaniard arrived.

His first game was a narrow 1-0 defeat away to league leaders Leicester City, before they drew 1-1 at home to fellow relegation rivals Sunderland, with Aleksandar Mitrovic netting a late equaliser.
