Blades fans aren't best pleased with the way things are going and Adkins hasn't made the situation any better.
They have seven games left in which to claw back the nine points that separate them from sixth-placed Bradford City and, perhaps understandably, many supporters have written off yet another campaign - which as things stands is the third worst in club history.
The players, the manager and the board especially, have all felt the wrath of Unitedites in recent months and few things could make it worse.
Step forward Nigel Adkins, their aforementioned boss, who's taken misplaced optimism to a whole new level.
The former Scunthorpe physio tweeted: "Situation is 9 points behind a play off place, 5 games at home to play, a Blade never gives in ! We need your total support. #unitedtogether"

A pride of lions in the zebra enclosure would have been arguably better received.
And to make things worse, it appears that Nigel struggles with his numbers, with only Walsall, Gillingham, Barnsley and Scunthorpe left to visit Bramall Lane.
Did he miscount, or is he really that sanguine - counting one of the play-off legs towards his tally? You decide...
This was how Twitter reacted to Adkins' post:
@TheNigelAdkins Nige let me know when you want me to drop you at the Nutt house— Mat Coll (@ColliverM) 31 March 2016
