Report: Liam Gibson has trained with Newcastle United's first-team all week

Newcastle United currently have limited options at left-back.

According to a report in the Daily Mail, Newcastle United youngster Liam Gibson has trained with the first-team this week, as Rafael Benitez’s explores his defensive options at St. James’ Park.

Newcastle are set to be without their three first choice left-backs for their match against Norwich City tomorrow.

Both Paul Dummett and Massadio Haidara are out injured, while Jack Colback will miss out at Carrow Road through suspension.

It was expected that Daryl Janmaat would have been switched to the left hand side of the defence, but the Dutch full-back is still carrying a knock, meaning that Benitez has limited options.

As a result, the Spanish boss has turned to the youth-team to solve the crisis, with Gibson in with a chance of being handed his first start against Norwich.

The 18-year-old reportedly was in line to make his debut for Newcastle against Leicester City, but the sacking of Steve McClaren blocked his chance.

Gibson is now expected to travel with Newcastle to Norwich, but it remains to be seen whether he will be given the nod.

Benitez also has an option to play Moussa Sissoko or Vurnon Anita at left-back, but the pair are both more comfortable in midfield.
