Kante vs Wanyama: Stats clearly indicate which player Arsenal must sign

Leicester City V Man Utd

Arsenal have been linked with Leicester City’s N’Golo Kante and Southampton’s Victor Wanyama.

Leicester City host Southampton this weekend in an intriguing Premier League encounter which will see midfielders N’Golo Kante and Victory Wanyama feature on opposite sides.

The two midfield enforcers are widely regarded as two of the league's better players in that role, and the result of this weekend’s clash could come down to which player outshines the other.

Arsenal will be taking a close look at the fixture at the King Power Stadium, not solely because the Foxes are the current league leaders but with a view of a potential summer transfer from either side.

According to a recent report in the Daily Mail, the Gunners have been alerted to Kante’s suggestion he could leave Leicester this summer while Wanyama has long been considered a target, as claimed by the Mirror.

But which player should Arsenal target this summer? Well, based on the Opta table below, there can be only one winner as Kante outshines his upcoming rival in four key areas.

Tackles per GameInterceptions per GameDef Duels Won per GameBall Recoveries per GameTouches per GameAccurate Passes per GameAppearances
N'Golo Kanté 3.2 4.2 7.27 8.67 57.57 31.37 30
Victor Wanyama 2.3 2.43 7.04 8.61 61.48 38.43 23

The France international has posted more tackles, interceptions, defensive duels won and ball recoveries per Premier League fixture than Southampton’s Wanyama over the course of the campaign.

The Saints’ midfielder does average more touches and accurate passes per match, although that is largely expected due to the contrasting styles in which Southampton and Leicester play.

Arsenal are desperate to add to their midfield ranks this summer, especially considering Mikel Arteta and Mathieu Flamini are largely expected to leave which will open up space for an acquisition or two.

Mohamed Elneny and Francis Coquelin are the two holding midfielders deemed good enough to play for the club, yet we have all witnessed what has happened the moment the latter picked up a long-term injury.
