Jamie Redknapp credits Toby Alderweireld for transforming Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur have the best defensive record of any side in the Premier League this season.

Jamie Redknapp has told Sky Sports News, on the morning of 1st April, that Toby Alderweireld is the player who has transformed Tottenham Hotspur this season.

Alderweireld was brought to Spurs from Atletico Madrid last summer, and he has enjoyed a wonderful first season at White Hart Lane.

The Belgian international has slotted into Spurs’ defence was consummate ease, and he has helped the Lilywhites keep the best defensive record of any Premier League side.

And Redknapp said: “This is a different Tottenham we’re seeing this season. They’re playing so well. Harry Kane has been a revelation, and Alderweireld has transformed them from being susceptible defensively to being a real strong unit. And the manager… what more do you say? He’s been incredible.”

Alderweireld proved his quality at Southampton during the 2014/15 campaign, but he has enhanced his reputation even further since moving to Tottenham.

The 27-year-old has thrived when partnered with either Jan Vertonghen or Kevin Wimmer at the heart of Spurs’ defence.

The Lilywhites have conceded just 24 goals in their 31 league matches to date, with Alderweireld being a virtual mainstay in the side.

Tottenham’s defensive strength has been a major reason behind their success this season, which has seen them mount a push for the title.
