Report: Rafa Benitez considering signing free agent goalkeepers for Newcastle

Goalkeeping Gloves

Newcastle boss is worried there will be slim pickings.

Newcastle United manager Rafa Benitez is to explore the club's options regarding Rob Elliott's season ending injury, report The Times.

The paper report that the Spaniard intends to use his extensive contacts to scour the market to see if there is a free agent goalkeeper who can help the club out.

Newcastle have lost both Elliott and first choice Tim Krul to serious knee injuries, both sustained on international duty.

They are left with a choice between Karl Darlow, who has not impressed since arriving from Nottingham Forest, and youngster Freddie Woodman.

Darlow is expected to get the nod against Norwich City this weekend, but Newcastle are not against adding a new face if they can.

The problem is, as The Times report, finding a player of sufficient quality. Generally speaking, if a player is a free agent at this stage of the season, there is a reason why, and they may not be fit enough to contribute right away, which is exactly what is required.
