Highly rated youngster Ryan Sweeney signs new Dons deal amid West Ham interest

West Ham United have been heavily linked with Ryan Sweeney.

West Ham United may face an uphill task in signing reported target Ryan Sweeney this summer after the highly rated youngster penned a new deal with AFC Wimbledon.

The 18-year-old defender was delighted to sign a new deal with the Dons, telling the club’s official website: “The gaffer approached me and said he was going to offer me a new deal and I’m really pleased with it.”

“My heart is set here. I want to play for Wimbledon. Every day I come into training to try and better myself. Every time I put on the shirt I feel a sense of pride when I cross that white line."

Sweeney has been one of the outstanding players in League Two this past month, putting in a sting of promising performances and prompting interest from both West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur.

A recent report in The Mirror explained how the Hammers have spent scouts to monitor the centre-back’s progression more than once since breaking in to the first-team eleven.

Sweeney has earned international recognition following his solitary cap for the Republic of Ireland U18 side, and his development could see him feature for the U21s over the next 12 months.

The Mirror also report that Charlton Athletic and Huddersfield Town are also keen, though the Championship duo and West Ham may now have face a tougher task in prizing him away from south London.

The Hammers, while keen to bring in top class players in order to help them challenge for the top four, are also keen to build a solid future having already signed youngster Sam Byram from Leeds United.
