Teddy Sheringham says Dele Alli can have similar impact for England as this former great

The former Spurs and England striker sees similarities with the teenage midfielder and former England favourite Paul Gascoigne.

Former Tottenham Hotspur and England striker Teddy Sheringham has told Goal that teenage star Dele Alli has burst onto the international scene with the same kind of impact as former hero Paul Gascoigne.

Alli has enjoyed a truly remarkable breakthrough season at club and national level since making his Spurs debut on the opening day of the season, scoring seven goals in 42 appearances at club level and slotting straight into Roy Hodgson's Three Lions side since his senior debut in October.

Having scored on his first start for his country against France in Novemver, the 19-year-old played a starring role as England came from 2-0 down to beat Germany 3-2 on Saturday.

Much has been made of Alli's ability and potential, and Sheringham believes that the prodigy has the capabilities to become as important a player for England as Gascoigne was in the early and mid-1990s.

The former striker told Goal: "He’s been brilliant. I’ve likened him to Paul Gascoigne, the way he has come onto the scene.

"He looks like he is made for the big scene. He plays like he’s accomplished things, he’s made for that type of arena and that’s great that he’s performing for England as well as he is for Tottenham."

Gascoigne is another player who made his England debut as a young talent at Spurs, first featuring for his country at the age of 21 just months after leaving Newcastle United for White Hart Lane.

The midfielder went on to win 57 caps for England between 1988 and 1998, becoming a key member of side in the 1990 World Cup and a focal point of the team which reached the semi-finals of Euro 96 on home turf.

By the time that latter tournament was over, Gascoigne was touted by many as perhaps the most talented player to turn out for England in a generation, and Sheringham's claim is certainly big billing for Alli.
