Michael Owen defends Everton defender John Stones on Twitter

The defender was crucial in the build up to Jamie Vardy's opener for England against the Netherlands.

Michael Owen has leapt to the defence of Everton defender John Stones on Twitter.

The centre back has endured a difficult few months at Goodison Park, falling out of the first team as his side have struggled.

While many commend him for his ability on the ball, some have started to question whether he is good enough defensively to be a regular for club and country.

He was handed his chance to impress by manager Roy Hodgson on Tuesday as he started against the Netherlands at Wembley.

He did just that, with a key pass setting England on their way to the opening goal in the 2-1 defeat, although he was later criticised for his slip that led to the Dutch equaliser.

Owen though, has leapt to his defence, saying Stones is the only defender who can bring the ball out form the back for the national side.

The debate about whether to start Stones at centre back is certainly an interesting one.

There is no denying his quality on the ball and the sort of quality he can offer with it, as demonstrated in the draw with the Netherlands.

That is certainly something the other defenders don’t offer at present, and perhaps England must take the risk on him if they are to be successful this summer.
