Sheffield Wednesday's top 30 players - Number 2

HITC Sport's countdown of the Owls' greatest players continues with Ellis Rimmer.

Until Ellis Rimmer came along in February 1928, Sheffield Wednesday were heading for the Second Division.

But with the £3000 signing from Tranmere Rovers on board, the Owls managed to take 17 points from their remaining 10 matches (you only got two points for a win in those days), surviving by one.

Much like Leicester City this season, perhaps, Wednesday went from relegation certainties to top flight champions inside 12 months, with the Foxes finishing as runners-up.

Rimmer, a left winger, was already an ever-present for Robert Brown's team, and in April 1930, as a second straight title beckoned, the 23-year-old was called up by England.

He marked his debut with a double in a 5-2 against Scotland, alongside clubmates Bill Marsden, Alf Strange and Ernie Blenkinsop.

But back at Hillsborough, Rimmer helped Wednesday to three consecutive third-place finishes, and despite not being a striker, top scored en route to the second of those - alongside Jack Ball on 23.

This was far from a one-off. Two years later, during the 1934-35 season - arguably Rimmer's most memorable, individually - he found the net on 26 occasions, as the Owls recovered from finishing 11th the previous campaign to being the third-best team in the country once more - and winners of the FA Cup.

In the final, against West Bromwich Albion, Rimmer struck 85th- and 89th-minute goals to help his team record a 4-2 victory, in front of 93,000 spectators at Wembley.

Sadly, that was as good as it would get for Wednesday (for another 25 years or so at least) and Rimmer, who departed in 1938 following 10 years of service with the Owls having dropped into Division Two.
